Sanford, N.C., February 20, 2013 – Christiana McLean of Aberdeen will be honored March 2, 2014 during halftime of the Wolfpack Women’s basketball game against Notre Dame. McLean is a recipient of Central Electric’s 2013 Touchstone Energy Basketball Camp Scholarship. This all- expense paid scholarship, sponsored by North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives, is only awarded to 26 young men and women across the state each year. The scholarship provides a one-of-a-kind educational and athletic opportunity to our state’s youth and reflects Touchstone Energy’s core values of accountability, integrity, innovation and commitment to community.
Last summer, McLean attended the Wolfpack Women’s basketball camp with Wes Moore in Raleigh. At camp, students worked directly with the players and coaches to learn basketball skills, leadership plus teamwork. Scholarship winners were selected by a panel of judges who reviewed McLean’s application which included academics, extracurricular activities and an essay. Christiana McLean, is a seventh grader at New Century Middle School.
“These scholarships are a fantastic way for young athletes to experience life on a college campus and learn from mentors at their favorite NCAA athletic programs,” said Janet Jackson, Energy Use and Information Specialist at Central EMC. “We’re proud to continue the tradition of providing this opportunity for outstanding students to develop life skills that will help them excel on and off the court.”
To apply, students must be in the sixth, seventh or eighth grade during the upcoming 2014-2015 school year. Applicants must have permission from a parent or guardian to attend the overnight camp and must provide their own transportation to and from the event if selected to attend. Applications and more information on the scholarships can be found at www.cemcpower.com. The Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarship program is part of the electric cooperatives’ ongoing commitment to North Carolina communities.
