Sanford, N.C.,- January 8th, 2014- Central Electric along with the other 25 Touchstone Energy cooperatives across North Carolina are partnering with two of the state’s top universities to provide educational and athletic opportunities for local middle-school students. Rising sixth through eighth graders in Chatham, Harnett, Lee and Moore counties are encouraged to apply for an all-expense paid scholarship from Central Electric Membership Corporation to attend summer basketball camp at either the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or North Carolina State University.
Central Electric is awarding two Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarships to local students this year. One boy will be selected to attend the Roy Williams Basketball Camp June 21-25 at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and one girl will win a scholarship to attend the Wes Moore Women’s Basketball Academy June 23-26 at N.C. State University in Raleigh. Applications must be received or postmarked by March 31st.
“These scholarships are a fantastic way for young athletes to experience life on a college campus and learn from mentors at their favorite NCAA athletic programs,” said Janet Jackson, Energy Use and Information Specialist as well as program coordinator at Central EMC. “We’re proud to continue the tradition of providing this opportunity for outstanding students to develop life skills that will help them succeed on and off the court.”
At camp, students will work directly with the players and coaches to learn basketball skills as well as leadership and teamwork. Coach Roy Williams, a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and College Basketball Hall of Fame, has led the Tar Heels to two NCAA championships. While Coach Wes Moore is in his second season with the Wolfpack women and has them off to their best start since the 1999/2000 season.
To apply, students must be in the sixth, seventh or eighth grade during the 2014-2015 school year. Applicants must have permission from a parent or guardian to attend the overnight camp and must provide their own transportation to and from the event if selected to attend.
Applications and more information on the scholarships can be found at www.cemcpower.com or by contacting program coordinator Janet Jackson at (919)-708-1638. Applicants will be judged on academics, extra-curricular activities and an essay. Winners will be announced by May 1.
