Central Electric is active in promoting energy-efficiency practices and renewable energy sources. That’s why the co-op joined 23 other North Carolina electric utilities in a not-for-profit cooperative called GreenCo Solutions Inc.

GreenCo Solutions focuses on coordinating the energy-efficiency programs already in place at the state’s cooperatives and on developing new renewable energy efforts.

GreenCo also provides compliance reporting and tracking for Central Electric related to the renewable energy standards enacted by the N.C. General Assembly in 2007. The law mandates that electric utilities in the state purchase or generate a specific amount of renewable energy or reduce their use of electricity through improved efficiency. The law also requires electric co-ops to reduce dependence on fossil fuels by 10 percent by 2018.
