Operation Round Up grants awarded to local non-profits

Thanks to Central Electric’s Operation Round Up program, powered by donations from Central Electric members, several nonprofits are benefiting from grant funding. Over $21,000 is being put back into the surrounding communities to provide assistance for worthy projects that provide vital service needs. Grants were awarded to the following groups:

  1. East Lee Middle School- Funded $2,500 for the Student Wellness Action Team (SWAT) to build an advisor network for at-risk students.
  2. Salvation Army of Lee County- Funded $3,000 for the GED Program to assist low-income Lee County residents in obtaining a GED and also for transportation of low-income residents to and from work.
  3. Spout Springs Emergency Services- Funded $3,000 to help purchase a digital marquee sign for special announcements such as fire conditions and burn bans along with any upcoming events.
  4. Chatham Housing Initiative- Funded $3,000 for the How 2 Save on Water & Energy (H2O) Program to teach techniques and awareness on energy and water efficiency.
  5. Coalition for Families in Lee County- Funded $3,000 to aid in expenses for the annual Lee County Child Care Conference.
  6. SAFE of Harnett County- Funded $3,000 to help purchase food and household supplies for women and children residing in the shelter.
  7. Chatham Outreach Alliance, Inc.- Funded $3,000 to help purchase food for distribution to families in Chatham County living in poverty and crisis.
  8. Triangle South Literacy Works, Inc.- Funded $1,032.50 to help support the computer skills training for job readiness, along with support materials for reading, writing and communication skills.

Operation Round Up is a volunteer program in which Central Electric members can choose to “round up” their electric bill to the next whole dollar each month. Voluntary contributions are made to the Central Electric Member Care Trust and grants are awarded for worthy projects by the Member Care Trust Board of Directors. Applications for 2016 fourth-quarter grant opportunities must be submitted by Nov. 4. Grant recipients will be announced following the board meeting on Nov. 17.
